The Yobe State Universal Basic Education Board (YSUBEB) has unveiled a strategic roadmap to address the growing issue of out-of-school children in the state.

This development comes as part of Governor Mai Mala Buni’s continued efforts to transform the educational sector and ensure inclusive education for all children in Yobe.

In an exclusive interview with on Monday, the Executive Secretary of YSUBEB, Malam Isa Shettima, highlighted the board’s commitment to tackling the crisis. “Our primary objective is to work tirelessly to mitigate the number of children not attending school in Yobe. The North-East region, where Yobe is situated, has one of the highest numbers of out-of-school children in the country, and this is a matter of serious concern,” he stated.

According to Shettima, the roadmap is comprehensive, incorporating partnerships with international organisations such as UNICEF and the National Commission for Almajiri and Out-of-School Children. “We are not working alone. Collaborations with key international partners are central to our strategy. These partnerships will ensure that the necessary resources, expertise, and support are available to achieve our goals,” he said.

The Secretary further elaborated on the various initiatives under the roadmap, many of which align with the state of emergency declared in the education sector in 2019. These include the construction and renovation of schools, teacher training programmes, and the provision of essential learning materials. He added, “Our initiatives aim to create a conducive learning environment for children and address the barriers preventing them from accessing education.”

Shettima also emphasised the critical role of community involvement in the success of the roadmap. “Traditional leaders, religious leaders, and parents have a crucial role to play. We need their full support to encourage children to attend school and remain in school. Education is a shared responsibility,” he said.

On the issue of funding, Shettima noted that sustainable financial support is key to the success of the initiatives. He called on the federal government, private sector partners, and international organisations to provide assistance. “The challenge of out-of-school children cannot be solved by the state government alone. We need the collective effort of all stakeholders to ensure that every child in Yobe has access to quality education,” he stressed.

Shettima expressed optimism that the measures put in place will significantly reduce the number of out-of-school children in the state. “With the support we are receiving and the strategies we have in place, I am confident that Yobe will soon become a state where every child is in school, learning, and thriving,” he concluded.

The roadmap is seen as a bold step towards addressing the challenges in the education sector in Yobe and ensuring that the state plays its part in achieving national and global education targets.
