The Northeast caucus of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) held a crucial reconciliation meeting at the Bauchi Government House, where party leaders deliberated on past electoral challenges and charted a course for future victories, particularly ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The meeting was attended by Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, Governor Kefas Agbu of Taraba State, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State, as well as party chairmen and other critical stakeholders from the region.

Presiding over the meeting, Chairman of the PDP Reconciliation Committee, His Excellency Olagunsoye Oyinlola, former Governor of Osun State, emphasized the need for unity, identifying internal divisions as a major factor in the party’s performance in the last election.

“The outcome of the last election was not pleasant for our party, and that is why the leadership has set up this committee to assess the reasons behind our setback,” he stated. “One major issue that stands out is the apparent disunity within the party. No general goes into battle with divided forces and emerges victorious. That is why we are here – to appeal to our leaders and members to come together, reflect on past mistakes, and rebuild the party for future success.”

Oyinlola further explained that the reconciliation process would not be a one-time engagement but a continuous effort, with zonal chairmen and state party leaders expected to submit reports on internal issues for review by the committee. “This meeting is just the beginning; reconciliation is an ongoing process. We are confident that with the efforts we have seen here today, the PDP in the Northeast is on the path to unity and strength,” he added.

In his remarks, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri expressed confidence in the party’s dominance in the Northeast, acknowledging existing challenges but assuring the reconciliation committee of ongoing efforts to foster unity.

“We have heard you loud and clear, Mr. Chairman. I want to assure you that in the spirit of our party, we will do everything necessary to strengthen unity among leaders and members in this zone,” Governor Fintiri stated. “We have done it before, and we will do it again. While we acknowledge some differences among members, they are at a minimal level, and we are actively working to address them.”

Fintiri highlighted the PDP’s stronghold in the region, recalling that the party won all six states in the Northeast during the last election. He expressed skepticism about the declared results in Borno State, insisting that the party’s support in the state remains strong.

“Despite what was announced, we still believe we did not lose in Borno. However, we are committed to further deepening reconciliation efforts, engaging with stakeholders, and ensuring that any lingering grievances are addressed.”

Looking ahead, Governor Fintiri made it clear that the PDP is already strategizing for the 2027 elections, emphasizing that the party’s ultimate goal is to reclaim power at the national level.

“We are not just focused on reconciliation; we are already working towards capturing power in 2027 because Nigerians are suffering,” he said. “The economy is not working, and there is too much hardship in the country. We are calling on the Federal Government to reconsider some of its policies that are only making life more difficult for Nigerians.”

He criticized economic policies influenced by external institutions, urging leaders to prioritize the interests of the people. “This country belongs to all of us; it does not belong to the World Bank, the IMF, or the international community. Leadership is a trust, and policies that bring hardship should not be part of governance.”

Fintiri concluded by reaffirming the PDP’s readiness to reclaim power in 2027, stating, “We are prepared to work together with our colleagues and party members across the country to bring back power to the people so that Nigerians can once again smile and experience true leadership.”

The meeting in Bauchi underscored the PDP’s commitment to internal reconciliation, regional unity, and a robust strategy for 2027. With the party’s leadership in the Northeast reaffirming its dominance and resolve, the coming months will be crucial in translating these commitments into actionable strategies for national resurgence.
