Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa state has redefined the landscape of education in Adamawa State through visionary leadership, inclusive reforms, and an unwavering commitment to improving both learning outcomes and the welfare of teachers. His administration’s approach, combining infrastructural renewal, policy innovation, and human capital investment, has positioned Adamawa as one of the most education-driven states in Northern Nigeria.

From the introduction of free and compulsory education to the transformation of schools and the empowerment of teachers, Governor Fintiri’s efforts have earned him national and international recognition, culminating in the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) National Award of Excellence, presented to him during the 2025 World Teachers’ Day Celebration in Abuja.

One of Governor Fintiri’s earliest and most impactful policies was the declaration of free and compulsory education across primary and secondary schools in Adamawa State. The policy removed financial barriers that had hindered children’s access to education, especially in rural and low-income communities.

To reinforce this policy, the government introduced free WAEC and NECO registration for all students in public schools — a move that significantly reduced dropout rates and encouraged greater parental participation in education. This also led Adamawa to be on top of the list of most performing states in the WAEC and NECO results.

The result has been a sharp rise in school enrollment, improved retention rates, and a renewed public trust in the state’s education system. While many Adamawa indigenes are giving scholarship to study relevant professional courses abroad.

Governor Fintiri’s administration has embarked on a massive school rehabilitation and construction program across all 21 local government areas of the state. Hundreds of dilapidated classrooms have been renovated, while new model schools have been built to provide a conducive and modern learning environment for students.

Through the State Universal Basic Education Board (ADSUBEB), the government has provided desks, teaching materials, and improved sanitation facilities, ensuring that schools are not only functional but also safe and inclusive for both students and teachers.

The introduction of digital learning tools and computer laboratories in selected schools marks the state’s gradual shift toward technology-based education, preparing students for the demands of the modern world.

Governor Fintiri has repeatedly emphasized that “no educational system can rise above the quality of its teachers.” To this end, his government has made teachers’ welfare and capacity development a cornerstone of its education reform.

Under his administration, teachers across the state have benefited from prompt payment of salaries, promotion, arrears clearance, and training programs aimed at improving teaching quality and professional competence as well as the new minimum wage.

The government’s partnership with the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) and other educational stakeholders has fostered industrial harmony, mutual respect, and collective responsibility for educational excellence.

Governor Fintiri’s administration has also reintroduced teacher training workshops, provided teaching aids, and ensured that over two thousand qualified educators are recruited and deployed to underserved areas.

These efforts have elevated the morale of teachers and restored dignity to the teaching profession in Adamawa State.

Beyond basic education, the Fintiri administration has invested in tertiary institutions, including the Adamawa State Polytechnic, Yola, College of Education Hong, and Adamawa State University, Mubi, Adamawa state College of Nursing.

Infrastructure upgrades, scholarship programs, and recruitment of qualified lecturers have strengthened the capacity of these institutions to produce competent graduates ready for the job market.

The introduction of skill-based and vocational training programs has further bridged the gap between academic learning and practical application, empowering youths with employable skills.

In recognition of these outstanding contributions to the education sector, Governor Fintiri was honored with the National Award of Excellence by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) during the 2025 World Teachers’ Day Celebration in Abuja.

The award acknowledges his exceptional support for teachers’ welfare, infrastructural renewal, and inclusive education policies that have impacted lives across Adamawa State.

This national recognition not only celebrates the Governor’s achievements but also serves as a testament to the state’s progress under his leadership.

Comrade Faisal’s proactive engagement and coordination have not only brought pride to Adamawa teachers but have also showcased the state as a shining example of cooperation and progress in education.

Under his leadership, the Adamawa NUT continues to stand as a model of unity, integrity, and purposeful service — championing teachers’ welfare, professional development, and national recognition.
