The Adamawa State Agribusiness Support Programme ADAS-P has joined other critical stakeholders engagement in a launch of a clean power and transportation for farmers in Yola, Adamawa State Northeast Nigeria.
The programme organised by Standard Microfinance Bank Yola in collaboration with Moonlight Energy, Carbon Trust, Newcastle University and Innovate UK is aimed at reducing the over dependents on diesel and petroleum, high cost of transport as well reduce climate change.
At the launching ceremony, electric motorcycles and tricycles that use batteries which can be charged by power from the grid or solar powered were Introduced.
The programme held at City Green Hotel Yola had in attendance representatives from Standard MFB, ADAS-P, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Newcastle University, Carbon Trust, Development bank, Mercy Corps, farmers among others.
On his presentation titled : Solar-Powered Tricycles and Battery Swap Points” the representative of Newcastle University Doctor Yomi, said the motorcycle have 2 spare batteries that can be charged using electricity from either the grid or solar powered.
The energy expert who explained that under the programme, charging stations would be established for farmers to drop the spare batteries for charging, adding that the strategy will reduce 90% cost of transportation for farmers.
On his part, the Moonlight Energy representative said the mission of the programme is to make last-mile transport affordable, sustainable, and efficient for farmers in Nigeria.
“We’ll provide portable battery swap stations for electric motorcycles and tricycles”. He said.
In his remarks, the Chief Operating Officer of Standard Microfinance Bank Yola, assured that the bank’s management will soon announce the process of accessing the motorcycles for customers.
On his part, the Hon. Commissioner Ministry for Works and Energy Development Hon. Adamu Atiku represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry Dr Dogara Paul Musa, expressed readiness to partner the Organisers for the betterment of Adamawa
The Chief Operating Officer of ADAS Programme, Alh. Yunusa Ibrahim was ably represented by the Head of Component Two Mr. James Birdling and Head three Mr. Praise Dauda.
The motorcycle’s battery is capable of covering 80 kilometers before it run down.
